The second part of the chapter talked about interpretive and ethically evaluative photos,
Interpretive photos were describe as photos that say more about the photographer than the subjects of the photos. They mentioned that subjects of these photos are often put together because that’s what the photographer wanted, otherwise the may never occur. One example was the picture of Thea abandoned babies on the roof. They would never be able to get there by themselves.
Ethically evaluative photos often display aspects of society that need to be focused on, by either condemning or praising it. It shows where the photographer stand ethically, reflecting on parts of the world that otherwise may go unnoticed if not given a face. One example was Carrie May Weems’ picture that featured a black woman looking in the mirror, with the mirror replying to it with a racist remark. Weems’ photo reflects the identity of black women in America who are forced into a inferiority complex. Evaluative photography is raw and real. Interpretive is more like “poetry”.
